Back on the ' Mox

It can never be said that Simba isn't a trooper. After a long ride and veterinary probing, now he has to take oral Clavamox every 12 hours. Simberz doesn't like the 'Mox one bit.

Micah and I took him all the way up to his old stomping ground in San Carlos to the Holly St vet hospital where he was treated for an abcess last year. The doctor's really cool, and they have everything onsite. Simba doesn't like riding in cars (actually I think it has more to do with the pet carrier than the car), and he panicked a little, but largely took it like a pro.

Anyway, she did a preliminary exam and took his temperature (which she had to take, you know, back there - something he also took like a pro). She aslo took blood for tests. Her initial prognosis was that it's likely an infection brought on by a scuffle he had. She noticed a lesion of some kind on his tongue that's consistent with a facial scratch but could be an indication of a larger problem. She twice mentioned the possibility of cancer: both in relation to the tongue, and the rash on his face, but said pretty firmly that if the rash came on in a few days, it's probably not cancer.

This morning, the results came back indicating that he also has a urinary tract infection that may be related to his facial infection or not. Cultures from that will take a few days, and they're still determining whether they need me to bring him in for a sedated examination where they can look at his tongue more closely. I dread the tought of biopsy.

When I got him back home yesterday, Simba laid down for a bit and then ran into the living room and yacked all over the rug. And this wasn't no hairball oopsie either. Think morning after frat party. It was the first and last time he's vomited throughout this whole ordeal, so I think he was just freaked out from the ride. At least it was on the cheap indoor-outdoor from Home Depot, which fulfilled it's carpet-protecting mission right well, thank you very much. $19.99 well spent.

The vet was $189 yesterday, and costs could go up if his condition turns out not to be transient. If anything it was a real indicator of time's passing. The doctor kept saying what an old boy Simba is, cuz, well, yeah - he's 11 this year. He's been through several moves and more roommates than I wanna count. And he's got lots who love him.

Today he's a lot more energetic, but still isn't eating hard food wth his tongue like it is. His slightly dazy look is gone, but he still doesn't have a whole lot of energy. His mood's good though. He slept with me all night.
