The great San Francisco stem cell boo-yaa

Why is Gavin' gettin' some love? Because late last night, San Francisco was selected, after a long and extremely competitive process, as the headquarters for California's stem-cell research institute.
Why is this cool? It establishes the first Jesus-free center for progressive medical and biotechnical research in the United States free of federal funding. We don't take federal money, we're exempt from federal bans on research.
This is expected to position San Francisco as the only city in America doing research on the level of the European centers that, thanks to the God Squad in Congress, are starting to kick our asses. While nobody is expecting another boom a la the dot-coms, this is still a big shot in the arm for the Bay Area. And boy do we need one.
Carl T. Hall of the San Francisco Chronicle explains it all.
This is why I live here.
