At the top of the list of things I'd never thought I'd say is...

Wow, I'd totally do Kevin Mitnick.

This one cleaned up nicely. Forget security consulting, he could shill for the Men's Warehouse, Lenscrafters, and 24 Hour Fitness. I like the way he looks. I guarantee it.

I was at Netcom back in the day, a few desks down from Tsutomu Shimomura, Robert Hood, and their group as they tracked Mitnick down. Looking back, it was pretty exciting, but I doubt anyone there realized that it'd be a Defining Event of that era. We all knew what was going on, but it was under the radar and wouldn't become a media storm until he was caught and detained. It's arguable that without the Mitnick case, computer security would've languished a lot longer than it did and we wouldn't have innovations like the Microsoft Patch-Du-Jour.

Now to throw it into WTF territory - I ran into Shimomura several years later at this fetish fashion party in San Francisco. It was mixed straight/gay so I've no window onto that, but I think I'm one of the few people that recognized him in his skin-tight lycra outfit. I mean, he looked pretty good, but...you know...Hey, I know you! You're the world-famous cybersleuth and lecturer who caught the most storied hacker ever...and you're with me at a fetish party wearing a form-fitting lycra unitard.

He still had great eyebrows.

Hmm...now getting Mitnick and Shimomura together for a 3-way would be both hot as hell and as meta as you can get. It sounds like the basis for a historical revisionist off-Broadway play by Gore Vidal. :-)

Truth is far stranger than fiction in Silicon Valley... like the time hack/phreak pioneer Captain Crunch tried to lure me away from a rave to his place in Napa for "full-body massage." I declined, largely cuz he was craggy and toothless and looked like the elf that studied the gates to the Southern Oracle in The NeverEnding Story ("to the winch, wench!"). And you don't even wanna know about the guy responsible for modern email transport. No, really...you don't.
