Collaborator
So this one comes outta nowhere: I really really like the new Depeche Mode CD. I dig the band, but I've never been a real fan. Violator's a classic, and I know most of the lyrics, but none of the albums that followed it really did much for me. I liked "I Feel You" but the rest certainly got nowhere near "Enjoy the Silence" and "World in My Eyes". (Parenthetically, I can shake my head and laugh now at the earnestness with which I thought my dad would appreciate the "Personal Jesus" single for his birthday - true story. Oy.)
Anyway, the songs on the new CD are really solid. Even the two that Gahan contribute are good. Evidently these are the first two DM songs he's written, at least on record. He fares a lot better than Liam Gallagher.
So, I'm in the camp that liked "Precious" when it first came out and since I don't listen to the assault of FM commercial radio, I still like it now. It's totally the single, and it stands out, cuz the rest of the CD is far more adventurous and less soothing. The first song, the extremly Gore-ly titled "A Pain That I'm Used To," starts out with an ominous klaxon sound, like an air raid at a British power station that I bet will open their shows on the tour. The titles are far hokier than the songs turn out to be.
I don't wanna overanalyze it, but it might be one of those rarities, like Pink's "M!ssundaztood" or N.E.R.D's "Fly or Die" that just come out of nowhere to become one of my faves of the year. "Damaged People" is a great song (damn those titles). :-) There's this cool effect throughout the album, like these oblique, just-under-the-mix scratches and blips that put off a sense of something just under the surface.
In other news, I set up a public SharePoint site (it's a 30 day trial) to demo it to some people at work. Check it! http://bentley.sharepointsite.com/default.aspx. God help me for writing this, but you should probably use Internet Explorer or the IE-View plugin for Firefox.
Oh! Speaking of that...The IE View plugin for firefox is bloody brilliant. I don't have to use IE anymore, or rather, I don't have to shell out of Firefox to do it. It's just another tab, and not only does Windows Update work like a charm, but SharePoint works tres depeche. More depeche than in its own browser. Heh. The sweetest perfection.
