Come, software, to me

On the geek front, there are a few software packages (besides the ubiquitous SharePoint) that I'm diggin' on lately, not the least of which is Google Desktop. I tried it out back during the first release and it was pretty useless since it could only index the C drive and most of my stuff is offshore from C to spare the OS. But now...now the new release indexes everything and holy kee-rap, I save so much time now that I'm having to find new ways of lagging around since I literally don't have to search through files anymore. I love having access right at my fingertaps on the task bar, though I do not like the side bar concept on bit. Too cluttered and ugly.

Prettys oon the whole idea of a file system, document, file, program...will be largely gone. Everything's just an object with a rich description. And if I may think aloft a mo, I'd like it if that's how our society went too...if there could be a shift in the reationship and people aren't items in a category, but individuals with rich traits. That's the level I try to live on, and it seems it's the one I learn on too.

While we're at Google, there's also the hush hush new beta of Google Secure Connect, which I can't get to work yet but it sure sounds cool, and there's Google's cool new personalized modular page at http://www.google.com/ig.

I've often used Windows' Character Map to find obscure characters or preview fonts ont eh fly and it's never ceased frustrating me how lame the tool actually is. Extended Character Map deals with all the problems like resizing, and being able to increase a selected letter's side. And it's free too.

And on the free tip, there's Microsoft's new SyncToy power toy for XP, which is really good at simple directory syncronization and migration. XP - hell, Windows - has needed this native for a long time. Also, if your computer can support higher-end graphics, check out the new Windows Vista beta picture program code-named Max. http://www.microsoft.com/max.

And I still love Notepad2. Now that I've actually replaced notepad with it, life is all gravy and cake.
