Gloria In Excelsis Hellodeo

The new camera's turned me on to some interesting websites, and I think Hellodeo is one of my faves. It's from the San Franciscans that developed Odeo, where I've had my podcast for over a year now. They've been gently pimping it on Odeo for some time, but since I haven't had a working webcam in ages, I never really poked around.

Hellodeo's concept is simple: record webcam video into a Flash client, and then submit it, whereby it's converted into a Flash movie that's hosted on their servers, ostensibly forever. You get a little piece of html of code to embed in your webpage or blog. The site is simple and attractive, and the tool is front and center. The only drill down is an archive.

All these things are very cool, but the developers' masterstroke is this: nowhere on the site do they mention that once you submit a movie, a copy immediately goes into the public gallery. So the archive is a surreal managerie of unwitting test videos:

and some surprisingly funny video haikus from peeps who've caught on:

I love the Flower Power clip. Very Laugh-In. :-)

Time in the gallery, however, is limited, and older videos do fall off. But the embedded code still works for wherever it's embedded. I could easily imagine a pretty sizeable community growing up around it.
