xfruits on alert!

No, I haven't started a new life as an ex-gay. :-) There's a France-based website called xfruits.com that positions itself as a free multi-purpose RSS feed management hub. None of the features are groundbreaking, but a central management dashboard, an active community, and a decent gui set it apart. The main features are:

  • RSS Aggregator: Consolidate multiple feeds into one. You can select individual feeds or an OPML file.
  • RSS-to-Web: Publish an RSS feed to a permenant URL at xfruits.com.
  • RSS-to-Mobile: Same as RSS-to-Web, but formatted for mobile devices.
  • Post-to-RSS: Publish an RSS feed with email sent to a permenant, custom email address at xfruits.
  • RSS-to-PDF: Create an attractive PDF automatically from an rss feed.

There are also three features in the works (greyed out on the dashboard): RSS-to-Mail, File-to-RSS, and something called Composer. Any feed can be shared with the xfruits community or kept private.

Post-to-RSS is a great solution for managing automated messages and notifications across the board. I was pretty bummed when Google suspended RSS support for Google Alerts, and this is a good band-aid until they come to their senses. If you're a Gmail user with group subscriptions, you can eliminate notification clutter in the inbox. After creating an xfruits Post-to-RSS feed/mailbox, set your Alert frequency to "as-it-happens" and then create a Gmail filter that forwards the messages to your custom xfruits address.

I created one for Google Alerts about Google. As you can see below (click for a larger version), you are able to specify exactly who can send email to your xfruits feed inbox. Come to think of it, it'd work well for for family blogs or team notes, too.

After a few seconds, the email is appended to the feed and a permenant web page. After one day, several alert mails had been sent. The hosted webpage looks like this:

Which is easily accessible thorugh any reader or Firefox Live Bookmark (shown here):

You can also skip your inbox all together and subscribe to alerts with the xfruits mailbox address. The first item in the feed will be a verification message. Click the link like you would in email and you're good to go.

I'm sure there are more uses. Let me know as you find them. :-)

I had to drop a line. I was looking up Prodigy videos on Google... found some of your feeds. Your shit is too funny. You take the things we only do in the bathroom in front of the mirror and plaster it all over the net. The vids where like Heroine. They were really dumb but I went on a goose hunt for more. Keep having fun. Its definatly entertainment. Stay out of trouble...
