Teen Wolfe

This is a capture from the original trailer to 1985's Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox (click the image to enlarge). This scene shows Fox's character (this is, no doubt, a stunt double) standing on the roof of a box van while he and Styles, his friend and the driver of the box truck, sing along to the Beach Boys. Look closely and you'll see they're 'van surfing' down Fair Oaks, which is a main artery through nearby Sunnyvale, California..

Which brings me to a couple questions...

  1. Assuming there's more than one Fair Oaks Boulevard in the world, was this scene actually shot in Sunnyvale?
  2. And if so, why on earth didn't they show him van-surfing nearby Wolfe Road?

Sunnyvale seems highly unlikely from the looks of that still image. It's definitely a California-style sign (and, yes, the type of sign used in Sunnyvale), but "Fair Oaks" looks way narrow -- possibly only two lanes wide -- with commercial buildup right to the street line. That doesn't look like any part of Fair Oaks that I remember, especially back then.

Indeed, this info on the sort-of-related "Back to the Future" may offer some additional insight:

From Universal City, Marty next hops to Bushnell Avenue in South Pasadena, one of the most often used settings in Southern California. (Oddly enough, another Michael J. Fox film, the less than legendary Teen Wolf, was filmed on the very same street!) From Interstate 110, take Fair Oaks Avenue south to Oak Avenue, then go east on Oak a few blocks to Bushnell.

    I'd vote for Pasadena.

Yay, Kniwt! Thanks :-) I figured it wasn't here. But it was clearly in California. *hugs*

That is the corner of Fair Oaks and Mission St. in South Pasadena. I grew up about two miles from there. South Pasadena is a gorgeous little town.
