Common music sounds better
My musical rotation for the past week and a half has come from the catalog of Magnatune, the first music label to advocate and use Creative Commons licensing for their artists. This isn't like the old mp3.com - you don't really have to search for diamonds among gigabytes of chaff. This is quality stuff. Sadly lacking in hip-hop, but a fantastic electronica selection.
I can't stop listening to A few things to hear before we all blow up by Wade Williamson, a San Francisco musician that usually performs with Echolalia. It's one of the rare CDs that's thoroughly enjoyable whether listening actively or letting its textures blend into sonic wallpaper. Some of the tracks have the same sunny dreaminess of Spiritualized's Lazer Guided Melodies, especially "Time You'll Never Get Back" which sounds like Spiritualized's "Angel Sigh" remixed by Cornelius. Williamson is far more playful with beats than Jason Pierce ever was, which makes this music a nice escape from the everyday and a balm for a bad mood.
